Week 23- Westward Ho!

Students will study the westward trails through secondary and primary sources, including journal entries of children who made the journey.

 

Mar. 20 - Mar. 24th

Week 24- Industry vs Agriculture

Students will examine life in the North and South in the first half of the 19th century

Mar 27th - Mar 31st

Week 25- Conflicts and Compromises

Students will discuss conflicts that eventually led to the Civil War, such as the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas Nebraska Act and the 1860 election of Abe Lincoln

April 3rd - April 7th

Week 26- The Civil War

Students will discuss the secession of the southern states and the beginning of the Civil War. They will study the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863

 

April 10th - April 13th

Week 27 The War Continues

Students will continue their study if the Civil War. They will discuss some battles of war and the role of women as nurses, seamstresses, and sometimes as soldiers and spies.

 

April 24th- 28th

Week 28 Reconstruction

Students will examine Lincoln’s plan to reunite the North and the South and read about his assassination in 1865. They will learn about the 13th, 14th, 15th amendments

Paper Clip Reading/Flashlight Reading:

 

 

•Flashlight reading is a Scholastic program to get children excited about reading! Children have a goal to read certain genres of books and keep track of them as a class and as individuals.

•Reading takes place using a flashlight to help children stay focused on a page and slow down on their reading.

•Children record their books and genres in their Readers’ Workshop folder
